Also in: Italian

Philip Moore and Simon Crawford-Phillips occupy a unique place amongst piano duos: they are established chamber musicians in their own right, with flourishing independent international careers; yet since 1995 have devoted several thousands of hours to this most exacting of disciplines, giving them extraordinary musical empathy. They met as students of Hamish Milne at the Royal Academy of Music, and during their time with him won 1st prize at the 1997 International Schubert Competition in the Czech Republic, 2nd prize at the 1998 Tokyo International Piano Duo Competition and the 1999 Royal Over-Seas League Rio Tinto Ensemble Prize, as well as many other prizes for piano solo. The Duo were selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust in London from 2001 to 2006, and their contribution to the profession was recognised through a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in 2004.

They have performed at the major UK festivals and recently at venues including the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), NDR Hanover, Barbican (with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields), The Royal Opera House, St. John’s (Smith Square), Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and Glasgow’s City Halls. They have made frequent appearances as concerto artists and recitalists at the South Bank and Wigmore Hall, and have performed in many European countries.

Regular performers on BBC Radio 3, they made their Proms debut in 2001, and have recorded on the Deux-Elles label to critical acclaim. Their latest disc includes Philip’s own arrangement of Stravinsky’s Firebird. In 2008 they gave the world premiere of Detlev Glanert’s Two Piano Concerto, co-commissioned by the Duo and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by Martyn Brabbins.

The 2009 season has included concerts in the UK, Italy, Washington DC and a live broadcast from LSO St. Luke’s, as well as two BBC Promenade concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, including the world premiere of Anna Meredith's Two Piano Concerto with Britten Sinfonia.

Philip Moore and Simon Crawford-Phillips are Steinway Artists and Associates of the Royal Academy of Music.
