‘Machaca’ is an international ensemble formed by Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanski in 2006, consisting of some of the U.K.’s most promising classical musicians.
Their first recording, ‘Mano a Mano’ was described as ‘a jewel’ by Gramophone magazine. It was launched at the Purcell Room in London’s South Bank Centre during La Linea ‘07, London’s famous Latin American Music Festival to critical acclaim. Together and as individuals they have performed all over the world.
Machaca consists of the UK’s finest young classical musicians including ODuo (percussion), Gemma Rosefield (cello), Lizzie Ball (violin and voice), Phuong Nguyen (accordion) and Al Mobbs (bass). Their recordings include a host of international guests, Adam Walker (flute), Laura Mitchell (soprano), Chilean guitarist Galo Cerón, the Spanish pianist Jose Menor, Venezuelan singer Luzmira Zerpa and the Sacconi Quartet.
They have toured Mexico twice, and played at major international festivals including the Morelia, Puebla and Mexico City festivals to critical acclaim. 2010 saw the launch of their much awaited sequel ‘Los Ambulantes’ at London’s Purcell Room, a musical feast of works by Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, Lauro, Machado, Iannarelli, Cardoso and two world premieres by Stephen McNeff and James Pearson especially written for Machaca.
